Featherwork in Early and Medieval China

 This paper is concerned with the early documented history of featherwork in China, as described historical texts and literature up until end Tang dynasty 907 CE. Although from several Pacific islands Latin America has recently been subject academic attention, important Chinese tradition neglected. Drawing on studies other cultures, this divides these accounts by technical criterion into flexible base (clothing, curtains, hangings, coverlets); rigid (boxes, architectural detailing, jewelry, screens); most remarkably all, deconstructionist featherwork, whereby barbs individual feathers were peeled apart then spun a silk core to create feather thread, which was woven cloth. Featherwork produced vast quantities medieval China satisfy demand for luxurious brightly colored items, exotic birds—kingfishers, parrots, pheasants, so on—were traded across empire wonderful works art.
